It Looks Like A Near Certainty

Brett Favre asked the Packers to release him so he can return to the NFL with another team after apparently being told his latest retirement reversal wasn't welcome news in Green Bay.

The story names NFC North rivals Minnesota and Chicago as possible teams Favre may sign with. I can't speak for Minnesota,or Chicago for that matter, but as a Bear fan I would rather they not sign him and use the money to buy another running back and instead concentrate on developing a quarterback that we can use for a few years.

So, to those interested readers, what do you think about the idea?

Won't happen, Gino. Reports are the Packers are going to force his hand by refusing to give him his release. That means he either plays for Green Bay or Green Bay gets to trade him someplace where he isn't likely to hurt them. That would mean someplace like, say, Oakland. And Favre won't want to go someplace where he can't win.

The Bears do need a better quarterback, though. Rex Grossman is a poor man's Mike Tomczak.

Glad to hear it Mark. Minnesota has a long enough history of bone headed sports deals already. Also it eliminates the possibility that we might have to get rid of John David Booty to make room for him. My favorite thing about the Vikings right now is that we have a player named 'John David Booty'.

mark: what are the odds green bay will put him on the roster but just not play him? what would his pay check be?
as for rex: last i heard he didnt have the #1 slot. it was still a tossup tween he and orton. last season, it looks to me like rex was concentrating too much on the big plays instead of just moving the ball downfeild, and giving up all those interceptions in the process. (among other things)

He's going to Miami I'll wager.

How old is Brett Favre, anyway? I mean, isn't he only in his thirties?

I know that in a lot of sports, being in one's thirties means you should be ready for the tar pits, but there have been plenty of exceptions.

I can only think of my two favorite sports: MMA and Boxing (in that order). Randy Couture is in his forties as well as a few other MMA fighters. Bernard Hopkins is in his forties, although I don't think he's fighting anymore.

My point is, if the guy still has as Rocky Balboa puts it, "A beast in the basement," and he can still play, let him have it.

I guess if I actually followed sports I would probably give a dang about it and I'm not disparaging anyone who does. I just don't understand what the hub-bug is about.

Favre is 38. Can he still play? Sure he can. The problem I now have with him is that for several years running he hasn't been sure if he wanted to keep playing. That puts a team in a bind and the front office was finally sick of being beholden to his whims. If he wanted to play this year he shouldn't have retired.

The Vikings aren't going to give away the store to the Packers to obtain someone who at best is around for 2-3 more years. Trust me, with another team that plays on turf, he's going to get hurt. I'm betting Atlanta will give up the store to obtain him. I'm sad about this because Green Bay is going to be a better team because of it. Can't blame the Packer's though for being smart in business. I'd actually like to see him in Green Bay again, especially if he's unhappy about it and causes disruption on the team.

kris: 38, and 17 seasons, is very long, and old, for the NFL.

watch a game, and then you'll see why.

The old man's going senile. I say we put him in a home, where he can have professionals take care of his ego and reputation in a way which he is no longer able...

(: All in good fun!

Gino,

I'd guess the odds that Favre will be back on the roster are pretty good. My guess is that the Packers would have to give him the opportunity to win the job and if he did, he'd play. But that's not certain. He'll never wear navy blue and orange. If he wears purple, it will be the purple of the Baltimore Ravens. But my guess is if he is an NFL player, it will be in Green Bay. And if he comes back, he'll get his full salary for the year, as his contract would still be in effect.

Gino,

I would think getting punched, kicked, elbowed, and/or wrestled to the ground at 45 would be more difficult than throwing a ball, or handing it off to someone else with the possibility of getting hit by a big guy throughout the game.

That's why I don't understand why at 38, if he's still got it, not to use it.

As far as his ego is concerned, that's a different story.

But, at least if Randy Couture gets knocked out, only Randy Couture loses. If Brett Favre has a shitty day, the whole team loses. Therefore, I see that point.

Here's why you rest at 38; you've got a bazillion dollars, a family, and two good knees. Time to learn a new business and enjoy life. Ever seen old footballers try to walk? It's not a pretty sight.

like my son's coach told him: take care of your feet and your knees, and some colleges can use you.

Well, I'm 33 and although I was never a professional athlete, I have no desire to settle down athletically. I plan on competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu well into my old age.

Then again, I'm not getting sandwiched by two 400 lbs. men or more.
