Oh my god - I had completely forgotten about Gorky Park - they were hysterical. Russian crushes Germany on this one.

I'll cast my vote against the Scorpions because they're German. But I'll also cast a non-binding vote against Gorky Park because of the blond guitarist's hair.

Hmmm... I would point out that Jethro Tull won the first Grammy for Heavy Metal in 1989. And they even did a couple of cool behind-the-iron curtain kind of songs, including the ten minute "Budapest": http://youtube.com/watch?v=5xpBL9hhrj4&feature=related

Yeah, Tull won the Grammy over ...and Justice for All, which tells you how much credibility the Grammys have in the genre...

I vote against the Germans in all things but beer and the occasional luxury/sport automobile. Gorky Park all the way.

However, I'd also like to write in Ozzy, who after his performance at the Moscow Peace Festival got so drunk on vodka that he tried to kill Sharon. I'm not saying that's OK...but it is pretty fuckin' metal...

Brian - what about sausages and sour kraut? The Germans got a few things right other than beer.

I saw the scorpions in concert in '85 they were great and I was barely 17 yo...the memories

Oh boy, the last, wretched gasps of Communism as Gorbachev tried to shore it up with perestroika....I was in Berlin when this concert was going on.

A few months later, there was a real concert a wee bit west and south of Moscow. The Scorps were there.

ben: luther was a german. hey, its not too late to convert.

kal: tull will battle when i have found an apropiate match up.

brian:'germans suck' is what my dad always taught me, but he had personal reasons.
no write-ins. you moaned for metal, you got it.
sheesh...

barngodess/bubba: i assume that's a vote for the scorpions?

Jade said...

Gino - but do *you* think that all Germans suck?

Gino said...

Jade: not as much as the french. ;)

Jade said...

LOL! OK then, I'm glad I'm 30% German and not French.

*BITCH SLAP* You call that Russian metal? At least pick someone that the KGB harassed. It's not real Russian metal if the KGB or the mob hadn't harassed the band at least once. *Shakes Head* Sorry about that, the Russian rock geekery took over. (Sorry, I write an offensive comic about Russian metal, I am hypersensitive on the topic.)

I vote for the Scorps on principle.

ouch.

OK, point taken...I won't whine about your musical choices. I'll just host a round or two of my own...

And yeah, my German thing is kind of personal too, though I bet it's very different from Gino's dad's...

Actually, I kinda liked the Russkies in that matchup. I was just babbling about it bringing back memories.

Vanessa has a good point, though. Maybe you should have put the "headbanging Solzhenitsyns" up on there?

W.B. Picklesworth said...

Now Solzhenitsyn I like!

brian does know a little bit more about dad's background than the rest of you. when his earliest memories are of certain soldiers holding rifles to his family, while thier comrades run off with every peice of livestock and every bushel of produce/grain they had, well, it can have a hate fostering effect on any child.

vas has some russianish-style gothicky type stuff she linked me to a while back. it really is kinda catchy, in a ghoulish sort of way. i liked it.
VAS: can you link that again?

Gotta go with the Scorps - the cover of their album Lovedrive is about as pure a distillation of irresponsible adolescent fantasy as one could imagine. And since we're talkin' metal, that's a good thing.
